Coffee and Conversation: Nurturing Wellness Together
May is Mental Health Awareness Month, and at Abyssiniaeats, we believe in the power of community, conversation, and connection. On May 17, we hosted a special event titled “Coffee and Conversation: Nurturing Wellness Together” in collaboration with Kinet Bet at Tyson Corner, Virginia. This event aimed to raise awareness about mental health, build community, and combat the stigma surrounding mental health issues within our community.
Building Awareness Through Dialogue
The heart of our event was a panel discussion facilitated by Bethlehem Bekele, a Wellness Coach, who guided the conversation with insightful questions and encouraged participation from attendees. The panel featured knowledgeable speakers who shared their experiences and expertise related to mental health:
- Sophia Miller, a Licensed Clinical Social Worker and Certified Christian Life Coach, helped us understand the concept of mental health and some common misconceptions about mental health that we should be aware of.
- Abebayhu (Mimi) Tekalign, a Licensed Mental Health Therapist, discussed the key benefits of therapy for individuals seeking mental health support and some prevalent misconceptions about therapy that contribute to stigma.
- Pastor Samuel Admasu, a Bible Scholar and Senior Pastor at the Baltimore Ethiopian Evangelical Church, covered some of the spiritual and emotional benefits of seeking support within a faith community for mental health challenges. He also addressed what misconceptions about mental health might exist within faith circles.

Their diverse perspectives fostered an engaging discussion, allowing attendees to learn from their experiences and ask questions.
Embracing Our Heritage
one of the unique aspects of our event was the incorporation of the traditional Ethiopian Coffee Ceremony, beautifully served by Senite and Sosina. Participants gathered around elegantly arranged coffee sipping authentic Ethiopian coffee while engaging in meaningful conversations. This beautiful ritual not only celebrated our heritage but also served as a warm and inviting backdrop for community building. As we sipped our coffee, we shared stories, experiences, and support, creating a nurturing environment for all.

A Community Effort
We would like to express our gratitude to our sponsors for their generosity and participation, which made this event possible:
Your support has been invaluable in our mission to raise awareness and foster community connection.
We also want to extend our thanks to Asli Multimedia for capturing the essence of the event through stunning pictures, videos, and sounds, ensuring that the memories of this meaningful gathering live on.
